Cooper, my teacher, Bob Hubbard, has me working Luft, the Kroepsch violin lines adapted for oboe by Stevens Hewitt & the Barrett articulations, starting from scratch. I'm doing the scales from Christopher Weiatt's book & the two pages of the Vade Mecum, per Martin's suggestion. Night on Bald Mountain, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Jupiter from Holst & Beethoven's First, for orchestra & the Christmas Festival of Leroy Anderson, with all those darned flats, for concert band occupy the rest of my time. As I continue to work on Bald Mountain, I've realized that although at the outset it looked really nasty, it's really not; just a lot of repetitious notes. Nifty duet with the bassoon mid-way through. The First Symphony is really a wonderful piece.
I've been to two of Martin's master classes at Fresno State. You are so fortunate to be with him every day. He's a terrific teacher.
Best to you & Martin,
john
