Alright, so just pondering some stuff late at night, bear with me...
so i'm a junior in high school and i have my heart set on pursuing a career in oboe. i consider myself pretty dedicated at this point in my life and i think I have what it takes. I'm planning on possibly applying to some very upper lever schools/conservatories (julliard, curtis, oberlin). and i guess i just wanted some more opinions on some things. Whenever my parents ask about curtis (they dont have any musical background btw), they say, "oh, u shouldn't go there, philly is not a nice city" and all i can think is "its curtis!!!". now granted this is clearly a far off dream because admission is next to impossible, but do you think if someone got into curtis they would decline because of something like that? and say i got in there, would that be reason to completely ignore any other schools i may get into because of curtis's reputation.
Also, how would you rank teacher importance as opposed to the quality of the college's ensembles or overall music program. because there is one school i'm interested in that has a phenomenal (sp?) oboe teacher but the music program doesn't have as good of a reputation.
Also, what would you consider a good indicator of a person's readiness to audition at a top notch school? I feel fairly confident that I understand my own abilities, I just was wondering if any one else had any specific milestones they felt were a good indication. I do know for sure that I want to pursue music for the rest of my life regardless of where i end up at in college
