Hi Sandee,
I found the Ann Arbor contradance pages through a link from our Bob Stein's page to your Bob Stein's page:-) Does your band have a website?
Our open bands in Philadelphia and Princeton do not have auditions! They are truly open (people just give you foul looks until you start to play better:-)
Do you guys use written music or play by ear? We use music, much of it taken from The New England Fiddler's Repertoire, The Portland Collection, Fifer's Delight, Balance and Swing, a bit from The Fiddler's Fake Book, many other sources. (I'm talking about contras, here, of course. What kinds of tunes do you play for contras?).
Tone doesn't matter here, but intonation and tuning do. That's why I use the HS*, although it does "focus" and "darken" the sound. But I'm tired of busting my chops to play, so I think I'm going to start transposing the tunes, beginning with those in Bb (yes, there are one or two!) through G (and their minors) on paper, so I can play them on my Bb with a K 10 M and a medium reed.
If you are into contradance tunes, put the words Thirty Below into your browser's search engine and see what you get.
Steve
