mostly my reeds don't leak, and i don't usually try to recover those that do by retying, haven't the time to sweat it with them, but if they're playing OK with just a tiny leak, then i'll wrap them, if the leak is close enough to the thread, otherwise out they go
i've got micropore, teflon, 'fishskin', cig papers and masking tape, any of which could be pressed into service at a pinch
the micropore is getting old, so the adhesive is useless, but when moistened and tautened wraps a reed nicely, molds well around the thread to hold it in place, and blends neutrally colorwise as it's translucent
i prefer to identify old retired but still playable reeds by covering the thread with the teflon tape, they're 'white haired' then, and easy to spot in a box
'fishskin' costs an arm and a leg, so it's reserved for special reeds only, as a waterproof coat over natural fibre thread
cig papers don't hold up to air pressure as a reed wrap, but do make OK emergency wraps around corks that are a tad loose in the reed well, although i prefer masking tape for that job, surface is slippery and slides out easily later
i find the saran/plastic wrap much too fiddly, static keeps on sticking it to me, and when moistened to solve that problem it just bunches up
