I went and bought a roll of Glad Press N Seal, and have been experimenting with it with things other than reeds like bookmarks, since I don't make reeds, and it seems to me that it's not sticky enough to seal a reed properly and permanently. It's like a version of very mild Post-It note glue in a big thin sheet, and it really only sticks well to itself. It's designed to seal itself around a food item, so the two sticky sides glue themselves together well, but it's hard to get a sticky side and a non-sticky side to seal; they pull apart fairly easily.

I used it to cover a paper bookmark, and it doesn't glue itself as such to the paper; you can still pull it off with your fingers. So I don't know if it would be effective on a reed, if it isn't really going to stay stuck on there.

ETA: and a lot of what holds it to itself seems to be simple static electricity, so that effect would be diminished in a tiny little piece such as you would use on a reed.
