Maybe the teaching methods in the UK are also outdated which is why I probably went along with it just like everyone else.

In the UK, the Baroque bibles are by Quantz or Robert Donnington - but I have neither of these.

But play the trills how you feel they should be played - if you like it to start on the upper or lower note, do which ever one sounds better.
