Hi,
I'm a newcommer to this board (and to the oboe!). Having a classical background (clarinet), I'm also discovering irish traditional music, so I'm wondering how well the two fit together. It is my understanding that the oboe and the pipes belong to the same family (double reeds), and the sound of the oboe is quite reminiscent of that of the pipes (or the other around...). This is why I would expect the oboe to be a popular instrument in Irish music, used intead of pipes. However, I couldn't find much information about it. Any resources you could point me to (bands, books, websites) would be most welcome.
I understand there are technical shortcomings (e.g. slides are nearly impossible), just as the boehm flute is not as well suited as the keyless flute (but there is a baroque oboe, isn't there?). But still, why is it that the oboe seems to be so well suited for Irish music and that it is not to be used? Am I missing something?
Thanks a lot for your insights,
Julien.
