Re: Which has better resale value?

... at the moment i'm playing Yamaha 441 grenadilla and my backup oboe is the Y211; whenever i upgrade to a more advanced instrument then Y441 would become my backup instrument, and the Y211 would then be available for somebody else just starting out, and so on ...

Do you have a backup instrument plan for those times your primary instrument is away for technical expertise fixing? My Y441 was away 10 days last time it needed tweaking and some preventive maintenance. That's not long, really, but it's a lot of time for embouchure decay and finger stiffening at my stage of the game, and i would've missed 2 band rehearsals as well ...

if you have an oboe teacher you intend to stay with, go for what he/she likes or favors, but if it doesn't matter, go for a good quality oboe you fall in love with, you really like it better than the others, not for its resale value
but for how you and oboe feel right together, for instance if you just hate that 1st 8ve key's shape or how you have to work around it rather than just flow with it, are you going to be playing your 1st 8ve notes and adjacent transition notes as beautifully as you could?

an instrument you love will be cared for better, too, so it'll hold its value longer because you're more likely to maintain it well, keep it in excellent condition and be more concerned and attentive to its safety and protection
from damage
