I would encourage you to take lessons, remember you are hiring HIM (or her) to teach you - so if you don't like their approach you can let them know, or quit if they are stubborn about it. Of course I don't mean you should tell them HOW to teach, but be clear about your objectives with the oboe. I am a professional and have had many students that have a "casual" approach, no problem!
However, I wouldn't suggest offering to play a scale (or anything else) better on your clarinet during an oboe lesson, I assume you were kinda joking around there. I have taken clarinet lessons (while oboe is my first instrument) and I tried to only focus on clarinet during the lesson. Good luck!
