Hi Carrie,
I respectfully offer a different opinion, Cooper -
If you have a responsible child, I think getting a great instrument asap is very important. While I was not fortunate enough to have a professional instrument until I was in college, (played on crappy Linton and nasty Selmer models) I have had students and collegues that had nice Lorees (or similar) from 6th grade band. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but each of these has excelled in the oboe and are either playing professionally or could have (but pursued different interests). Playing the oboe is a struggle, and fighting the instrument just makes it harder.
Obviously this is NOT a recommendation for the average student - but it sounds like your son is careful even of his old horn, swabbing each time even to the point of being late for his next (less important of course! - joke) class. If you have this fine instrument available, what better use for it? Otherwise it can rot in the case while your son struggles with a lesser instrument. I say feed the flame of his interest while you can!
Good luck - Jill
