Re: Wooden oboes easier to play?

"So it would seem that your more expensive, more "finished out" oboes are easier to play...."

Any oboe of any cost that has been finished well or overhauled well will play much better than one that hasn't been, be it wood or plastic. Even a cheapo Chinese oboe bought off eBay that someone has spent time (and wasted money on) fettling will play better than a wooden one that has been neglected.

My plastic Selmer Signet oboe responds just as well as my more expensive and more "finished out" wooden Howarth. Although the Signet plays differently (and takes some getting used to what with the tuning on certain notes and a brighter tone in comparison), it's just as easy to play in terms of response and I have no problem in playing it in any setting as it does the job an oboe should do - low Bb speaks easily as does altissimo F and every other note in between - that's what I expect all oboes of all makes and ages to be like (provided they have been well maintained or fully overhauled) - if they're not, then someone somewhere hasn't done their job properly.

Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010

The opinions I express are my own.
