I'm still using the shaper tip (Ob.) that I learned to make reeds on in the early '70s. I purchased it through my teacher from a NY area dealer named Peter Angelo (his name is embossed on my mandrel)...It is a relatively wide shape, I still store it in the little envelope he shipped it in, on which he wrote, "Am sending my best tip. This type is very widely used. P.A." It has a little N at the base; based on my purchases of several different pre-shaped pieces of cane, it may very well be a Brannen N (it's not far off from a Ruth for those using Adam shaper tips). I have repeatedly been told that oboists are generally using narrower tips now to achieve increased stability and perhaps more focus in the highest register, but I like my fat reeds and don't find I have stability issues. I recall that Harold Gomberg was famous for using huge reeds...anyway, CJ's RDG 2 is in Gomberg territory, if not fatter!
