One thing about EH reedmaking.

American Scrape only:

For the longest time I used a narrow oboe shape (Gilbert -1) and would scrape 69mm reeds with much taken out of the back. When I would go to make EH reeds I could never get them up to pitchy, constantly having them sag on me.

Nowadays, I've gone the other extreme, and am playing with some very very wide shapes (Gilbert 2, which I originally was using for d'amore reeds!) and have learned to make stable reeds on such a wide shape. Learning how to take less out of the back to maintain stability is not something that comes easily to all American oboe reedmakers, and it's worth learning how to do on wide-shaped oboe reeds before screwing up $3.50/per piece English horn cane.
