I'm not sure what you mean by "narrow", but on all other terms it makes sense to me. There is as many oboe sounds as there are oboists; some more pleasant than others of course! As far as influential players, I think Tabuteau was on to something. He created a reed that did most of the work for the player, and frankly that's how it should be. I don't believe that the reed should be difficult to play, or require extra effort. It should just be there, and the effort would come from the players breath support, not from their lips. Playing on difficult noisy reeds seems to be a waste of time; time that could be better spent learning about music, and phrasing, what have you. To me, I find the american reeds to be the most refined: when I get to a partially finished reed, I have a german reed, and then when I adjust that, I get a french reed, and then when I adjust that, I get an american reed. In any case, I'm biased against the dark sound...so shoot me!
