Hey, I think I do somethng similar...
I call it the double rainbow. I scrape ala Weber diagrams, then finish by making a high arcing scrape above the blend, then scrape the extreme 1/2 to 1 mm very thin so the knife falling to the plaque hardly makes a noise.
For more responsiveness, I do the second rainbow curve about 1 1/2 mm below the outer one, more than dusting but just slightly.
I agree, a shorter tip helps a lot and packng all this double rainbow plus thin extreme tip requires patience, a light touch and as usual, a well honed knife. I use the term well-honed rathen than sharp, because it is not a cutting edge, rather a wood-working thing with a very slight burr.
Finish with a somewhat dried reed while finishing the heart and tip for best wood-working effect.
Polish off the final cane instead of cutting or scraping.
For cane demanding a longer tip, extend just the sides of the tip into the heart a bit using a fairly steep angle of knife, say 45 - 60 %. If that makes it too stiff, dust the lower arc of the double rainbow again.
That plus the angled tip cut you do, should help 3rd va response.
All this I find most true using 10.5 or > cane diameter, so I tend towards a medium to small opening and 3rd octave response is one of the drivers of that dimension.
