Not a trick per se, but I find slurring to the 3rd octave a bit easier and more reliable on shorter reeds.
I do agree there is something desirable in the tone for reeds 69.5 - 70 mm, but once I drop back to 68 or even 67.5 (46 mm staples), and take a bit more out of the back... windows further back, the 3rd octave response improves and the lower range pitch comes up to desired placement w/o any biting.
Its kind of addicting, yet I toil first to make a longer reed and realize there is another reed hidden below and the way they play more than the way they sound is the attraction. (Sound is not gross, but there is a trade off of sorts).
