Craig -- The Marigaux M2 is almost the one-piece oboe you imagine. The top joint extends down only past the octave vents, and the middle joint is one piece down to the bell. Even though it is one piece, I noticed on the few I have tried that the levers which meet and connect the middle joint keys with the top joint on the standard oboes are still used on the M2, even though no separation of the M2 there is possible.
With respect to O rings, I use one which I made of leather on one of my oboes to slightly space the top from the middle joint -- it helps a little with intonation fo the G, F# and E in the second octave, without unduly flattening the lower octave low notes. I also think that it gives a slightly fuller sound to the second octave, adding a touch of resistance. Clarinet players often space the joints as well. I don't use it on another oboe I have of the same make and model.
