As long as we're in here talking about EHs, I had a couple of very basic, and probably dumb, questions that I've always wondered about, but weren't worth starting an entire thread for.
1. It's a transposing instrument in F, yes? So it sounds a fifth lower than it's written? Question: is the fingering identical to the oboe, except that the notes that come out are a fifth lower?
2. How on earth do you learn to play it? Because I have yet to come across an English Horn method book. Do you just already know the oboe fingerings and then learn how to mentally extrapolate that a fifth lower whenever you have an EH in your hands?
