<<I would say the opposite of some have said on this topic >>
I don't think I've ever heard or read anyone saying that low notes should be played tighter or further down on the reed. Every source I've ever found says that lower = looser and more on the tip.

Well, yeah. Is it the third or the fourth finger? I guess when I look at my hand, I think of it as the fourth finger. But from a fingering-chart perspective, I suppose it is the third.
Maybe I should just have said "ring finger".
So, there is a name for that finger, and the index finger is also called the "pointer." The thumb is . . . the thumb! And the little finger is the pinkie. (There was an extensive discussion on the Klarinet list a couple of years ago about this nomenclature, resulting in the discovery that "pinkie" in reference to the fifth (fourth?) finger is actually a time-honored designation based in linguistic history.)
But what do we call the remaining digit (the middle finger)? Besides "the bird"?
