at first i thought that the 2nd oboist was jean de vergie, who also played 2nd oboe at the boston symphony for a long time, but after googling around a bit i found that article about holmes. the reason i thought it might be de vergie was that i thought his embouchure could possibly be explained by his being a frenchmen. i took lessons from a french oboist in france for a year in high school and am convinced that native language differences affect the shape of the mouth and the embouchure as well (another topic!). anyway, for those not familiar with the following funny essay written by de vergie's son, it's a classic:
