Something I recently learned is that it's not how much they take in, but how much reed is exposed in the mouth. I recently asked Martin Schuring at ASU why he kept telling me to take less reed in, but why he played down to the string, and he told me he takes a lot of lip in with the reed, so actually very little reed is exposed in the mouth. Not sure about the 2nd oboe player, but just a thought.
