Hi Howard,
FYI.. This is a really rough guide to what is going on ....
David Nuttall is currently with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra since leaving the Canberra School of Music, so you could gain private lessons or perhaps lessons through the Conservatorium there.
The main centres of teaching are Melbourne and Sydney just due to the size of the cities and the amount of arts activities, though there are some good teachers in Brisbane and Adelaide you should also investigate.
In Melbourne the main University based teachers are Eve Newsome (ex-MSO now OV), Stephen Robinson (principal OV) and Anne Gilby (ex-SSO and German Orchestras) with some students with Geoff Dodd (MSO) and Jeffrey Crellin (Principal MSO), they all teach either at the Victorian College of the Arts or the Conservatorium.
In Sydney Alexandre Ougey (SSO) seams to have quite a good class running at the conservatorium. Diana Doherty (SSO) has only a small group of masters students but generally only does masterclasses.
If you are a foreign student one of the big issues is of course cost which you can check out on the university web sites, all up you should take a trip and have lessons with a few people and see what you think.
If you wish to discuss off line please just check my email and/or just email any of the committee of the ADRS at www.adrs.org.au any of us would be more than happy to advise you, give you contacts for teachers or let you know what is going on.
