Thanks for the suggestions, guys.
Suzan's sounds good; I will definitely check it out. Heh, it's funny you should mention handbells, as I am currently one member of our 8-member handbell choir, we're chronically short of people to begin with, and I can just picture the expression on the director's face were I to tell her, "Hey, let's play this piece so I can play the oboe. Now, whose arm can we twist to step in and play my bells?"
Unfortunately transposing existing flute/oboe arrangements is not an option, since I'd have to transpose the entire piano part, too, and while I do have the skills and the software to do that, the software I have (Finale Notepad and Music Masterworks) don't produce slick, professional-looking copy, and I've had experience before with handing these printouts to other amateur musicians and expecting them to read off it. Doesn't work very well. And the church pianist already has enough on her plate preparing the Sunday morning service without expecting her to wade through 20 pages of odd-looking printout for a single song, each page with about 4 staffs on it. The regular piano accompaniment usually fits on two to four pages, and that's what she's used to, and she's a nice lady and I don't want to make her life any harder than it is.
St. Matthew's Passion": is there a particular part? I didn't realize there was a famous oboe solo in there. I thought "Bach oboe" (except for the Brandenburg) was all just doubling the flutes when it wasn't in the key of "sharps" and calling for oboe d'amore.
"Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring"--hmmm...I refuse to play that unless and until I can get the choir (or a quartet) to sing the choral part, too, because IMO it's only half the song if you just play the obbligato. Drives me nuts. Same with "Sheep May Safely Graze". Which are both projects I have on the back burner, never you fear. I've got the church organist penciled in to play the flute with me on "Sheep", except that since she's also the Leading Soprano, the choir director may be rather sticky about her not singing. Maybe she could play and sing...
