I recently started working part time at Forrests Music and have had a chance to sample their oboes. They carry Loree Royals and C series, both regular and AK.
I have to admit I am still stumped as to putting my finger on the differences (aside from the obvious fact that the Royal is heavier). One thing I will say, ALL the newer instruments are more responsive and better in tune than the older ones. The technology and craft seems to be moving forwards.
So if you are making comparisons, it would probably be most fruitful to make sure that the instruments at least come from the same year or so.
I'm following this thread with interest because people often ask me what the differences are, and I think that is a difficult question to answer. I tell folks to try everything we have, each instrument is an individual. But it would be nice to have something more "intelligent" to add to that, especially when they want to know why the Royal is more expensive and what they are paying for, besides the extra wood.
(I am speaking for myself, not as a Forrests employee.)
