<<particularly you Susan, as I know you have a Traditional>>
Actually, Jay, I have a Covey "Classic" -- the more recent addition to the Covey line. Craig has the Trad. I think Shawn (oboehotty) also has a Covey.
My Covey Classic was my first "good" oboe, so I don't have that much with which to compare it, in terms of my own experience. I have commented here before, though, about my (post-purchase) experience of play-testing my Covey against a standard Loree, a Yamaha 841, and a Fox. My experience was much like what Craig has said -- the Covey acquitted itself very, very well in that contest. That surprised me quite a bit, because my preconceived idea was that it would sound "lighter" against the Loree, and it really didn't.
The biggest thing the Covey has going for it, in my estimation, is a certain ineffable sweetness to its tone (I think Craig has said this, too). I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have gotten comments from listeners (including my teacher) about this. Of course, when my teacher compliments my playing, she ALWAYS follows her praise by noting that I have a fine instrument. (. . . couldn't possibly be the player . . . must be the horn. . .)
In fact, the person who originally owned my Covey (a serious, very high-level amateur) wrote me that the first time he played it at an orchestra rehearsal, the director asked him what he had done, because he sounded so much better than usual. I had a similar experience -- the first time I played it in rehearsal, the director (new to our group) stopped the piece and raved above the oboe tone (he had been told that I was relatively new to the oboe, and was expecting the worst. Saved by the Covey?).
The other thing the Covey has is a very good scale. It is not difficult to play it in tune. It just plays well. There is nothing problematic about any particular range. Stable. Consistent. Sweet!
Coveys also come in THE coolest cases around -- mine is walnut. Gorgeous!
Good luck to you -- let us know how you like it/them!
Susan
