It seems to change.
Every batch of cane - even from the same farm, and same local distributor - has been different. I've had great alliaud, I've had crap Alliaud. Lately, I've been using Cogolin Var - the batch I've been using is tight-grained, and produces a nice open reed. Next batch, who knows!
In any case, I think as long as you keep standards - like testing how hard the cane is, observing its color, and smoothness, etc. - you should be able to make reeds out of most of the brands of cane that are available.
And don't get too wooed by a certain brand, and then go buy a whole truck full of it. I once got this REALLY good sample from a cane company (About 10 tubes, but from whom I won't say). It was incredible. I barely even had to do anything, and I had great vibrant reeds that lasted. Then I bought a kilo of the same cane, and...
Back to the same old story. I threw out a good portion of it, and only made "acceptable" reeds. Nothing fantastic.
