Just a comment on good cane, (i will preface this by saying that I supply cane to a few people now and then ).. I ma usually using Alliaud cane and find it's a good substance to work with.
I would reallly suggest that no matter what brand/tpye etc. you get that you make sure that the gouging is done correctly and consistantly and that these days you have the cane density tested PRIOR to purchase.
There are a few suppliers now who are using density testing and this does increase the % of reeds that are playable and last. It is really just another quality control that can cost a little bit more $, but has good results.
I have when taking reed classes, I have had the opportunity to test a number of different brands that have been brought to me by students.
It is interesting to see that the variation of density within 10 pieces of cane is sometimes shocking. Yes, you can nearly always find a few good pieces but i have found batches of really hard and rellaly soft cane in the same small batch (between 19 and 26 on an indicator in the same batch of 10 pieces), which really makes the already hard task of creating good reeds more difficult.
