many people seem to reply off the topic. This young fellow wanted to find out how difficult to enter Curtis. Most people told him some further stories about the nature of this industry. Some are quite negative (from clarinet board)....
Most people don't know it before they go to any music schools in the world. The most gifted/talented players might be doing as good in other profession, but they chose to be musicians. Unless you are a renown pianist/violinist, otherwise the chance to get rich is slim.
I came from Hong Kong. Since I graduated in a music school in the States and came back, the conductor here wanted to hire English style players in 1994.
I mean the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
Then I devoted more time to teach and form a woodwind quintet.
After a while, I earn around $3600 -4000 US dollars each month. However my income is not guranteed and there is no health insurance. I must pay my own insurance and save money for retirement. Does it worth to go to this profession?
I addict to music. Whenever I play with some good players, I fell so good but I am not good at audition, this good feeling "sustains" me to keep playing. I create more teaching opportunity for myself.
I demonstrated with a beautiful TV soap opera's theme for the junior students, end up many of them wanted to learn it.
Now the problem is the beginner's instrument is too expensive, so I find a less expensive instrument for them and create a used beginner's oboe market here, so the parents won't be hesitated to buy new instruments.
I can survive then I can make music.
We must be creative in this industry to survive and make music.
