First of all, the Curtis graduates got good jobs because this school did not pick many students, the students must be very gifted. They got good jobs because of their talent, lucky and extraordinary hard working.
I would encourage my students to apply (for those who want to play oboe professionally) even it's hard because getting a job is very hard too.
Curtis graduates have very solid basic technique if they grow to be a great musician then they would be very stable.
In fact, last June I went to Paris Superior Conservatory, the musicality of the students there is amazing.
Becoming a good musician with great job needs a few things
1. Talent
2. Ambition
3. Hard-working
4. Good Musicianship
5. Good training Orchestra
I studied with John de Lancie in Aspen Music Festival summer school, I would not say he taught with very special technique. He has never demonstrated in lessons or taught me reed-making.
I only learned Barret and basic technique.Since I respect and also afraid of him, so I went to practise at 7:30am, end up I got a lot of improvement.
