< unintended reductions in breath support at the end of each note>
I know I have been chronically guilty of doing exactly that on phrase endings -- kind of like I quit playing before the phrase is done, or something. I wouldn't be surprised to find that I was doing that in miniaturized fashion on EVERY note.
I also like d-oboe's suggestion of thinking of the phrase as one long sustained tone, with dynamics. I tried it earlier, and there was some improvement. Maybe thinking that way fixes my tendency to "back off" a tone rather than keep it moving?
And yes, some reeds are better than others. I've performances coming up, and I'm trying to hang on to my best reeds for those, and not use them in practice. The one I was using today is stuffy -- it sounds good on the tape, but it feels hideous, as if it weren't vibrating at all.
