Hi Shawn,
We both use the guillotine and the Opus 1 gouger.

I'm not sure what you mean by wide enough. Do you mean "long enough"? I actually had to adjust my guillotine to make it longer, because I didn't like the motion it made from one end of the piece of cane to the other. If you look at your guillotine, there's the chopper at one end, and then there's a metal "block" with an allen screw which is holding the block down. You can loosen that allen screw with an allen wrench, and move it a little so that it chops your pieces longer.

If you mean the pieces are not "wide enough", I'm not sure what to tell you. Mr. Driscoll insists that our pieces should be no wider than 8mm from one side to the other, and has the measuring thingy which will check it for you if you have any questions (http://opus1gouger.com/). As for diameter of cane, not sure what to tell you. It shouldn't matter what your diameter (either 10mm-11mm) since the clips that hold the piece down are smack in the middle of the bed.

Edit: Oh yeah. I do split with a razor blade, as it gives me one or two extra pieces every couple of pieces. Mr. Driscoll was the one who recommended this year's Bonazza straight from the factory. It works really well, and is straight and cheap. (http://www.bonazza.com/Index.asp)
