The diameter of your cane could be too narrow. Are you measuring with a radius gauge? Also, consider that your pregouger may be taking away too much cane. It's always easy to get a different pregouger - they aren't too expensive. The splitting device shouldn't matter too much - it will be splitting the cane at three equally distant points on the tube cane - it's just that sometimes the distance between those points isn't a perfect circle. Therefore, some pieces might not have the same diameter.

Just points to keep in mind.

ps. don't use exacto or razor blades for cane splitting. one day you will cut yourself...and you will regret it.
