Technically, baroque rules are that if you approach the trill from below (say you have a c and a d and then you trill on e) then you trill up (to the f). *BUT* if you approach from above, you trill down a step instead of up a step. This rule can either be followed or ignored, as most baroque "rules" were. Baroque composers left a lot on performance up to the player.
