I also have had the opportunity to witness both extremes. In my hometown (Edmonton), the principal symphony oboist supposedly made 3 reeds a month, whereas the principal oboist here in Montreal (of the MSO, and I don't study with him) supposedly makes 5 reeds a day. The former was trained in Poland, the latter in Philadelphia and Auckland. Go figure!
I suppose there's no good rule - just personal preference.
I think that as long as one finds a good system that works for them, then it's fine. However, sometimes I worry that some college students take for granted the time they have now to make reeds, and practice...but in the real performing world, there isn't hours and hours of time for reedmaking. The decision then becomes whether one makes reeds more often, and that break in almost immediately, but don't last long - or make reeds less frequently that have longer break-in periods, but that last longer.
