While I *can* make a reed in 10 or 15 minutes (from either a blank or a piece of gouged cane), I find that my best reeds are usually made over a couple of days. The first day, I just make a reed, make sure that the pitch is in the ballpark and avoid doing much finishing on it -- leaving the finishing for the next day. I think it helps to let the cane dry out once before I finish it.
Also, I prefer to let the blanks dry out completely before soaking them again to make a reed -- If the cane is wet enough to tie onto the tube, it doesn't behave the same way as when it's only been soaked enough to play.
