My reed routine.

Sunday morning is my reed tying time, when I tie my weekly supply (5-10, depending on what's left in my box). I usually have lots of gouged cane, so all I have to do, is shape and tie the cane. I try to let my blanks dry out at least 24 hours before scraping.

I like to scrape my reeds over a few days, I feel it makes them last longer. So I alway (or at least I try to) have 2-3 reeds decent enought for rehearsal and/or performance, one or two reeds that crow, but aren't finished and the remaining blanks, that I'll scrape during the week. I find that every time I play on ''emergency reeds'' (gouge, shape, tie, scrape and play all in 30 minutes or so) they last for the time of the performance and die after, but when I take time to break them in (first playing day= a few scales, then rests, THEN I finish them) , they last at least 3-4 days, and go on for another 3-4 days as ''practice reeds'' or student reeds.

This said, I studied with a ''a reed a day for the rest of your life'' teacher as well as with european teachers, who break in their reeds for quite a long time. I think I hover somewhere in the middle when it comes to the whole reed thing!
