I was very fortunate in that the orchestra director in my junior high school was an oboist, so I had very good training, and personally made reeds, from the start.
I recently visited my parents and found my old clarinet. It had a huge crack in the upper joint out of which I could feel air rushing when I tested the joint. I soaked up a THIRTY year old manufactured reed and tried playing the thing. I hadn't played clarinet more than a half hour in the last 30 years. It sounded great. I couldn't have told you what notes I was playing, but it sounded like a clarinet.
I took out my oboe, soaked up one of my recent reeds. I've been practicing oboe daily for about a year. I tried to make my best oboe sound. It sounded ok.
Yes, oboe is difficult to play.
