my son (playing clarinet) went thru that in jr high, he wanted to try oboe, teacher said maybe next year , we thought of signing him up privately just so he could give a it try but the teacher had already changed his mind. Now ,in high school my son is going to go for it if we can find a private teacher over the summer, no pressure to be great , just a learning experience I wish his teacher hadn't discouraged him from.,and if he ends up playing in high school band or our community band, than all the better, since I have yet to see one oboe in that school in 5 yrs, and yet they have excellent students and an otherwise excellent music program. can't figure that one out.
