Mike....I think you hit the problem on the head. Tying on further down the staple does help (as I recall, after having re-tie many reeds) and the gouge may also contribute. I've never actually wanted to gouge my own cane so I used pre shaped cane, ready for the tying on.

Seems like gouging your own cane, albeit allowing even more control in the reedmaking process, is a bit much for me to handle at this stage.
