Hey Howard,

Thanks very much for your input. I did a little experiment using just the reed. First, without anything in my mouth, I formed my embouchure and tongued to see actually where it wanted to hit. I found that the tip of my tongue wants to touch the inner gum line of my upper teeth. So I took a Fibercane reed (which I purchased just for the heck of it), formed the embouchure and tongued. I did feel the tip of my tongue just VERY gently grazing the underside of the reed. BTW...Fibercane reeds are shorter than cane reeds. So what you say is correct. Not every technique works for everyone. Like most musicians, I am my own worst critic.

I remember in high school, I was a freshman and there was a flutist that was a senior. I remember that there was something wrong with her mouth. Now the "accepted" technigue of placing the flute nearly horizontal is what is taught, when she played, she held her head near horizontal but the flute was heald very low. This girl played the flute beautifully and I always enjoyed listening to her practice.

I guess this goes to show that nothing in playing a musical instrument is written in stone. No matter how much instruction, you still have to find your own way in making beautiful music.
