I agree you need practise time but Richard Woodhams raised a really good point at a masterclass when a student stood up and started playing something on a "practise" reed- which couldn't play above a mezzo piano. Richard Woodhams asked, "what exactly are you practising? If you can't play with shading and controlled dynamics, how will you do it on the good reed?" Practising to me isn't moving your fingers, it is everything involved in making music, whether for yourself or for money. I don't want to be held hostage by a reed that has outlived its short life.

The only person I know who has lasted a month on a couple reeds is a French oboist, who shall remain nameless, and he even admitted that his "laziness" in respect to reed making sometimes has him at the reeds mercy and even though he is an amazing player, his tone and his performances suffer from the schizophrenic behavior of his reeds.
