I use the cheap plastic contoured plaques from Forrests for a number of reasons - they are wide enough for cor reeds but not too wide for oboe reeds (they are also nice and long), I can buy them in red rather than black so I am less likely to lose them and they are so cheap that I buy several at a time because I lose them.
I haven't used a flat steel plaque in years, although I keep a few around just in case I want to use one just for tips. The plastic contoured plaques are only really contoured on the edges, so to work on tips, I just move the plaque to one side of the tip and I have the middle of the plaque to scrape tips on, which is more or less flat. It has been a long time since I have knicked a tip or ripped a corner off.
