I find that many flat steel oboe plaques are just barely wide enough for English horn reeds, with less than 2 mm on each side excess. This has occasionally resulted in the plaque slipping sideways enough that I end up doing damage to the tip of the reed with my knife. An internet search shows a number of firms selling Rigotti convex ebony plaques. I've never used a contoured plaque. Does anybody use these and recommend them?
The other thing I was considering was getting a flat steel bassoon plaque, but I'm afraid this might be too wide, affecting the accessibility of various knife angles.
It seems like they make everything else anyone could ever wish for--why don't they make an blued steel EH plaque that's just a few mm wider than the oboe plaque? Or am I just incompetent at keeping my plaque centered?
