Moral???
Rachel, if you like the quality of your sound with the reeds you've learned to make over the years, if they play soft as well as loud, project when they need to, are stable in pitch, and responsive to your musicality, how in heaven's name could you be possibly making them WRONG???
I learned an American/Tabuteau scrape from my beloved teacher in the 70s. He was a GREAT reed-maker and never used a micrometer; just intuition and knack. He didn't use a ruler much, either. I made a few 'personalizations' of the scrape he taught me over the years and every now and then I order a 'professional' reed made by one of the Greats to compare my scrape and style with.
Turns out that in the end, I like mine best. That is my favourite thing about reed-making: it's so adaptable to the player.
I've not read all the other posts, but I would encourage you to stick to the working factors, make little experiments here and there, and find Your Best, and then hold to that.
