Hi Rachel,
Quote:
It seems my reedmaking style has developed to the point where I am 'doing it wrong'.
PuLEEEZE! You are NOT doing it wrong. I have yet to meet two professional oboists who make reeds in the same way! The fact that you have an efficient, competent style that complements your playing says it all.
What advantages does this other style have for you and your playing?
More stable intonation?
Better response?
Bigger dynamic range?
Sweeter tone?
Better articulation?
Longer-lived reeds?
If there are no concrete advantages to changing styles, why bother? If it works for you (and it obviously does) - stick with it! By all means experiment with other styles and techniques if you wish, but don't be coerced into making pointless changes unless they come with consistent advantages.
J.
