Sounds sort of cruel for your band director to give a completely unplayable instrument. If you really want to start playing, I'd suggest just renting a good student one for a few months. Shouldn't be too much. On the other hand, any repair work will come with a hefty price tag. If the joints are loose, you'd need to recork it too. After regluing the pads in, you might run into leaks. Way too much work.

So, IMHO, either get a working instrument or wait a few months. You don't want to be wondering if it's you or the instrument....
