Graf and RDG experience only....
Some cane has a lot more abrasive material and that accounts for a lot of variance in terms of when to re-sharpen. 250 t0 1000 gouges between re-sharpenings is in the range for me, so not very specific.
When the gouged ribbons of cane start to get more 'grainy' and require more downward pressure, for sure it is time to sharpen.
And in general, more frequently is better ala sharpening your knife.
The Principal CO Symph. oboe friend has his gouger blade pro-sharpened once a year and he takes some pride in making fewer reeds each subsequent year.
At a reed master class with him a few years ago he had in his journal a gradual decrease in annual reed attempts down to 220 or so, just enough for his own needs.
I have gouged 1000 on my most recent RDG and think I'll prolly go for a pro-sharpeneing again finally.
Doing Graf for over 20 years, I'd say I sharpened 1 X a year, manually per Paul Covey's sharpening instructions, far more crude than a pro-sharpening service.
I probably make 100 - 150 reeds a year only for my use these days.
So, my resharpening needs might be rather light compared to other's.
