It really varies. I have a Graf gouger, but I believe that how often you sharpen the blade has alot to do with the cane that you buy. I had a batch of Pisoni cane several years back that was very hard on my blade. Seemed like I was sharpening it often. I went back to Ghys, and I didn't have to sharpen it so much. In other words, it depends on WHAT you're gouging! Just like a drill bit or saw blade...you can cut alot more stock when you're cutting pine than when you're cutting oak.
