I think it's best having a variety of fingerings to use in the top 8ve to suit the piece and to make things as easy as possible. The top 8ve is my biggest headache on oboe/cor as being pirmarily a sax player the notes up to high F# are still in the upper register and are easy to get around (opening each key in turn or using the front F key from high E-F#), whereas on others (flute, oboe and clarinet) they're in the altissimo register and the fingerings are all over the place in comparison.

I wasn't best pleased when I got a copy of that Donizetti piece for cor, having been recommended it and it was all up the top! Not only is it 19th Century Italian opera (not a fan of that stuff) and mainly in the weakest register on cor, but I ended up getting my fingers all knotted up trying to get around it. Has to be said it's been put away in a drawer somewhere collecting dust.
