As far as I know, Amazon is probably the most comprehensive source for recorded music of any sort today.
There is also a catalog of all available CDs, etc., presented by genre and by artist, that you should be able to find at a library or at Blockbuster or some such place -- I can't recall the name of it, but it's like Books in Print for music. Maybe it's online, but if it is, I'll bet you have to pay to use it.
As far as lists of oboe players, the best one I know of is here:
http://www.oboeinsight.com/DoubleReedMusicians
This is the website belonging to Patty Mitchell (Patricia Emerson Mitchell), who is a professional oboist and teacher in San Jose (teaches at UC Santa Cruz -- Go Slugs! -- and University of Santa Clara).
Be sure to look at the home page of this site. The site is a real treasure trove, and Patty is wonderful about answering questions and communicating with her correspondents.
Don't know about your historical question. Ask Patty. She'll probably find it and add it to her site.
